Workers fixing roof of tornado-damaged Indiana church

Posted: Updated:
HENRYVILLE -

Crews have started repairs on a church that was heavily damaged by tornadoes that hit southern Indiana this spring.

It is costing $250,000 to replace the roof and do other work at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Henryville. The 85-year-old building was left standing but was badly damaged when a tornado roared through the town on March 2.

The Courier-Journal reports crews also will repair the steeple, interior plaster and four broken trusses.

The church had served as a headquarters for relief efforts while the parish held Sunday Mass in the sanctuary. Masses have been moved to the basement this month because workers discovered roof damage was worse than thought.

The church's pastor says insurance will pay for all but $5,000.
