Authorities believe a broken air conditioner might have led to the heat-related deaths of an Evansville couple whose bodies were found inside their home.
Autopsies were planned to determine what killed 73-year-old Paul Armes and 66-year-old Marcella Armes but city police Sgt. Larry Nelson says it was about 108 degrees inside their trailer home with all windows and doors closed when officers went inside Monday evening.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports a relative called asking for police to check on the couple. They were last heard from about July 1 and Evansville's temperatures have topped 100 degrees on seven days since then.
Neighbor John Griffin tells WFIE-TV that the couple's air conditioning was always on.
Heat is suspected in at least five other deaths in recent days across Indiana.
