INDIANAPOLIS -
All this week on Sunrise, we are taking a look at parenting styles, and how your style is impacting your child's development.
Are you a drill Sergeant with strict rules? A consultant with a more democratic approach? A pushover with an "anything goes" mentality, or a helicopter who never lets their child out of their site?
We want to introduce you to one mom who is a combination of parenting styles that her kids respect.
Brother and sister Joshua and Emily Lang know the rules of their home, and when it comes to knowing who's boss, there's no question: it's mom.
"I'm not drilling on them for everything, but there are very set rules and they know the rules and know what to expect," said mom Becky Lang.
And what's expected is the same from both mom and dad.
Lang says she and her husband have similar parenting styles, a little drill sergeant with a mix of consultant. It's a blend she says has worked well.
"It's nice that it's consistent so there's no lax if somebody's working. It's not like 'we can get away with this because Dad's at work or because Mom's at work'."
The style has worked well so far. Lang says this way of parenting came natural for her, because it's how her parents raised her.
"We had rules and we knew what to expect. It was pretty clear cut, there was no wavering. I may have thought it was strict when I was growing up, but looking back on it now I wouldn't have turned out the way I did had it not been for my parents always being on me."
If Emily or Josh disobey, the consequences are no surprise. Emily gets grounded from her iPod and Joshua loses iPad privileges.
"They know what's expected of them, and it's very rare that they're not on their best behavior."
