Hazmat fire near airport

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Firefighters and hazmat crews battled an overnight fire at a waste disposal company near the Indianapolis International Airport.  A bin of used rags soaked with toluene caught fire around 1:30 a.m.

The fire at Heritage Transport in the 1600 block of Research Way required no evacuation, given the industrial location and time of day when minimal staff was present.

Hazmat crews monitored air quality around the fire and reported that ambient air never reached dangerous levels.

IFD requested a crash truck from the airport in case they needed to enclose the burning rags in foam.

Heritage hauls and disposes of hazardous waste on-site, so the facility was capable of dealing with any spills without harming nearby businesses.
