INDIANAPOLIS -

If you are the parent of a teenager, you may be a little nervous with the idea of your teen getting behind the wheel and driving. This morning, there's a free program at the Indiana State Fairgrounds to help alleviate those fears and give your teen the skills they need to be a safe driver.

But those fears are generally well-founded. Car crashes are the leading cause of death of 15-to-20-year-olds. And, nearly 13-percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes are teens, even though they make up only 65-percent  of licensed drivers.

Practice, education and experience is key to turning those numbers around.  Which is what the "Key to Safe Teen Driving Program" is all about. The same people who teach race car drivers how to maneuver behind the wheel are showing your son or daughter what to do in dangerous situations.

The program simulates real-life challenges drivers face on the road. With the help of an instructor, teens get behind the wheel of a "skid car" to learn how to maneuver in wet conditions.  They also learn emergency lane changing and how to change a tire.

The courses are being held at the State Fairgrounds today and tomorrow.

You can register for Tuesday's classes here.
