Two deaths reported in Marion County due to heat

Posted: Updated:

The Indiana sun may be beautiful but this weekend in Marion County it was also deadly.

Doctor Virginia Caine with the Marion County Public Health Department says, "It's going to take a toll on your body."

The Marion County Coroner tells Eyewitness news 54-year-old Randall Yates was found dead outside his Cambridge square apartment Saturday afternoon. Investigators think Yates was walking in the area an hour before collapsing.

The coroner says extreme heat was a contributing factor to his death. Neighbor Libby Browder says she was shocked when police told her what happened outside: "He shouldn't be walking around in the heat like that. Older people should stay in."

The other heat-related death happened at a home on the city's near west side. Neighbors say they knew the homeowner as "Mr. Tony." They say while you can see that the 92-year-old had air conditioning units, he never turned them on.

Doctor Virginia Caine/Marion County Public Health Dept. "Please use air conditioning. If you don't have AC and you only have a fan, it is so important that you don't use that fan in an enclosed room. You need have ventilation."

"Mr. Tony" or Anthony Bruton was found inside his Holmes street house Saturday morning. The coroner says the temperature inside his home was nearly 100, and with his age, health officials say, it's impossible to be in that heat.

The doctor wants us to remind you to be careful. Even if the temperature does drop this week, the hot summer we've already had, has taken a toll on your body.

Watch out for decreased energy, loss of appetite, dizziness and heavy sweating. More serious signs include vomiting and diarrhea along with hot dry skin and a throbbing headache.

If you notice someone in trouble because of the heat, you should call 9-1-1 right away.
