Former IPFW chancellor hopes his caring rubbed off

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

The former Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne chancellor says he leaves job after 18 years with a sense of accomplishment.

Michael Wartell tells The News-Sentinel that among the things he's most proud of is the expansion of the physical campus, the move to Division I athletics, an increased number of endowed chairs, program growth and community collaborations. He's also proud the way people worked together to reach common goals.

Wartell's contract ended June 30. He turned 65 this year, the mandatory retirement age for Purdue University executives. The Purdue board voted down a resolution by the IPFW Senate to allow Wartell to stay for the university's 50th anniversary in 2014.

Vice Chancellor Walt Branson will serve as the interim chancellor until Vicky Carwein takes over Sept. 1.
