INDIANAPOLIS -
At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Grand Am teams are spending the weekend in Indianapolis testing out the track in preparation for the debut of a new race in just three weeks which will be a part of the Super weekend.
"This is absolutely the first time we have had a true sports car series come and compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway" said IMS spokesman Doug Boles.
This will also be the first time cars have taken to the oval and the road course in the same weekend.
Boles explained, "And to make it even more difficult for us on Super weekend we're actually going to start out on the oval, convert to the road course on Thursday night, do the Grand Am race on Friday the 27th, then convert back to the oval for the nationwide and sprint cup races so it's going to be two conversions not just one."
For Rolex series Driver Jeff Segal his first time in Indy has been amazing despite the record breaking heat.
"You know it's not so bad once you're out in the car fortunately this track has a nice long straightaway you get some good airflow coming through the car really it's the standing around waiting that's what kills you," said Segal.
Fans did a lot of standing around so creativity was in order to keep cool.
"Drinking lots of water and staying in the car with the shade" said Liz Grainda who came to the Speedway with her family.
It didn't cost any cash to get into the Speedway but spectators absolutely paid a price with sweat to watch Saturday's testing.
"Sweat equity absolutely. That is for sure," said fan Todd Stephens.
Stephens and his family love racing and say it's worth taking on the heat to see cars back out on the road course.
"This is the racing capitol of the world so I think everyone embraces it and enjoys it," he said.
With that said everyone from the drivers to the fans hopes the heat will take a back seat to the racing for Super weekend.
