Synagogue's chandelier refurbished in South Bend

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BEND -

A chandelier that once lit South Bend's first permanent synagogue is shining again in the former site of that house of worship.

The South Bend Tribune reports a ceremonial relighting of the chandelier was recently held at what's now the team store for the city's minor league baseball team. Silver Hawks owner Andrew Berlin paid $40,000 to refurbish the chandelier.

The chandelier is believed to have originally held candles when it was used by the Sons of Israel Synagogue. The congregation underwent a denominational change in 1982 from Orthodoxy to Reconstructionism, and its name was changed to B'Nai Yisrael.

Declining membership brought the end of services there about 1990.

The brick building is now owned by the city of South Bend and is part of the Coveleski Stadium complex.
