Grand Am cars at IMS today

SPEEDWAY -

A first-time event is coming to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway later this month. But today brings a chance to sample the Grand Am action free of charge.

More than one hundred race cars - more than the Speedway has ever seen for a one day event - will race. Today and tomorrow, those drivers will be running laps to get a feel for the track. And for fans to sample this kind of racing here.

It's the first time the IMS has hosted a sports car race, which logistically presents a challenge.

This test weekend is also a chance for IMS staff to see what it will take to transform the track not only for the Grand Am race, but then to covert from the road course to an oval course in just a matter of hours to accommodate the Brickyard 400.

"Not only is that going to be difficult for our facilities folks to change the facility," said the Speedway's Doug Boles, "it's going to be difficult as well as just parking and access, especially Friday where the road course is taking place and access to IMS is limited. Parking is extremely at a premium for the event, so it's going to change a lot of ways for teams, and spectators to deal with IMS."

It's called the Super Weekend at the Brickyard when these races get underway. Grand Am drivers and teams, Daytona prototypes and GT Cars are all here for the event.

Testing takes place Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m.  Admission is free.

A word of advice if you do plan to go to this race on July 27th - get your tickets early - because seating is general admission.
