Fort Wayne group opens doors to pets hit by outages

FORT WAYNE -

A northeastern Indiana animal welfare group has opened its doors to the pets of residents hit by a weeklong power outage.

The nonprofit Hope For Animals shelter is housing pets at no charge in its air-conditioned shelter until the power is fully restored to the Fort Wayne area, which was hit last Friday by severe storms that were followed by sweltering heat.

Executive Director Madeleine Laird tells WPTA-TV the animal welfare group sees the temporary service "as an extension of our service to the community."

She says many people hit by the power outages and the current heat wave are reluctant to accept help from friends or public shelters if they can't bring their animals along.

Hope For Animals is dedicated to eliminating euthanasia of healthy adoptable pets.
