Two arrested in Northern Indiana for breaking fireworks ban

Posted: Updated:
GOSHEN -

Police officers arrested two northern Indiana men on charges that they broke a county ban on shooting off fireworks and started a grass fire.

Goshen police say the fire spread across four yards Wednesday before firefighters were able to put it out. No building damage or injuries were reported.

The Elkhart Truth reports that residents told officers that the grass fire had been sparked by people who had been lighting fireworks at an Independence Day gathering. Officers then arrested the 25-year-old and 29-year-old men on misdemeanor charges of violating an emergency order.

Elkhart County is among numerous counties across Indiana to prohibit use of fireworks because of the state's drought conditions.
