The sheriff of a southwestern Indiana county that saw as many automobile fatalities in June as it did during all of 2011 says the surge appears to be an anomaly.
Gibson County saw five separate single-fatality crashes last month - the same number of deaths on the county's roads for all of last year.
Sheriff George Ballard says such a high number of deaths is certainly an anomaly with all of the safety enhancements vehicles now have.
Ballard, who's been with the sheriff's office for 37 years, tells the Evansville Courier & Press that "five in one month is extremely unusual."
State Police Sgt. Todd Ringle says there doesn't appear to be much connection between June's fatalities to suggest law enforcement should be targeting once specific area.
