A historic southwestern Indiana chapel that's sported a wood shake roof for 165 years is getting a new asphalt shingle roof church officials hope will protect the building's religious treasures.
Vincennes' Historic Review Board approved church officials' request Tuesday to replace the roof of the St. Rose Chapel, an 1847 building where orphans cared for by the Catholic Diocese once worshipped.
Father John Schipp told the board the chapel's wood shake roof was replaced 10 years ago but is already rotting away. He worries leaks could threaten the chapel's original pews, altar and other treasures, including a more than 150-year-old statue of the Virgin Mary.
The Vincennes Sun-Commercial reports roofing contractor Mike Quinett assured the board the new asphalt shingles will resemble the chapel's current wood shake roof.
