INDIANAPOLIS -

Firefighters say a child playing with a lighter is believed to be the cause of a fire that displaced a family of five Wednesday.

Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department were called to the 900 block of Ketcham Street at around 3:19 pm. Smoke was showing from the second floor when they arrived, and they had the fire under control within ten minutes. No one was injured, but damage was estimated to be at $25,000.

David Crenshaw, 27, told investigators that his sons were upstairs sleeping when one of them ran downstairs to say the bedroom was on fire. Crenshaw got the children out of the house after finding the mattress on fire. He attempted to put it out himself but the fire grew. He then called 911.

The home is occupied by Crenshaw, Sharon Hooten, 27, and three children, ages six, five and two. Two dogs were accounted for. The family will stay with neighbors.

The Indianapolis Fire Department would like to remind residents to keep matches and lighters out of reach of young children. For more information about the IFD Fire Stop Program please call 327-3473.
