St. Joseph County trustee resigning weeks after guilty plea

MISHAWAKA -

A northern Indiana township trustee who has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a ghost employment investigation has decided to step down.

The St. Joseph County Democratic chairman says Penn Township Trustee Jeff Dean will resign effective July 13.

Dean plead guilty in May to official misconduct charges but refused to immediately resign because a judge hadn't yet accepted his plea agreement.

County Democratic chairman John Broden tells the South Bend Tribune that Dean's resignation is long overdue and that he'll move quickly to have a caucus to select a new trustee for the township that includes Mishawaka.

Prosecutors charged Dean with paying his live-in girlfriend at the time more than $37,000 for cleaning work that she didn't complete. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 30.
