A memorial service is planned in the southern Indiana hometown of a Marine who died in Afghanistan.

The service for 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Hunter Hogan is set for Friday at Brownstown Community Church. Hogan died June 23 during combat operations and was a 2009 graduate of Brownstown Central High School in Jackson County.

Brownstown Community Church pastor Mike Patton says the memorial service is being conducted in conjunction with Hogan's funeral and burial in Nebraska, where Hogan's father lives.

Patton tells The Tribune of Seymour that the Brownstown service is a way for local residents to pay their respects and say thanks to Hogan. A Veterans of Foreign Wars post's honor guard will conduct a 21-gun salute after the service and taps will be played.
