An eastern Carolina television station reports that actor Andy Griffith has died at the age of 86.
WITN reports that an ambulance was called to Griffith's home on Roanoke Island early Tuesday. The station quotes former UNC President Bill Friday, a friend of the actor, who said that Griffith had died.
Griffith is famous for his television role as Sheriff Andy Taylor in the Andy Griffith Show from 1960 to 1968. (Hear him sing the theme song here.) He's also well known for his role in Matlock.
Griffith is considered one of the pioneers of early television, making frequent appearances on the Ed Sullivan and Steve Allen Shows.
