A northwestern Indiana man could face up to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to reckless homicide in a crash that killed a man and injured his wife.
44-year-old Randolph James Scalzitti of Dyer pleaded guilty Monday to charges of reckless homicide and failure to stop after an accident resulting in serious bodily injury in the 2010 crash. The October 17, 2010, crash killed 75-year-old Lawrence Szafasz and seriously injured Shirley Szafasz.
Police said that Scalzitti rear-ended the pickup truck the couple was traveling in along a street in Highland with his Ford Explorer, pushing it about 300 feet.
Scalzitti then allegedly continued to accelerate his vehicle, sending the couple's pickup into a concrete pillar.
