No one-size-fits-all approach to wooing Hispanics

Posted: Updated:
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -

The reasons Hispanics give for supporting either President Barack Obama or Republican challenger Romney are just as diverse as they are.

The Latino vote includes Republican-leaning Cubans in Florida, Mexican immigrants, descendants of Spanish settlers in the Southwest and Democratic-tilting Puerto Ricans in the East.

Immigration policy would seem to be the natural top issue for these voters, except that nearly two-thirds of Hispanics are born in the U.S. Their priorities echo many voters' - jobs, the economy, education and health care.

Democrats and Republicans are in a fierce race to appeal to Hispanics, who could decide the outcome this year in Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Florida and elsewhere.

Long term, their numbers are expected to double to 30 percent by 2050, boosting their political power.
