Fireworks ban difficult to enforce

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

On Saturday, Mayor Greg Ballard signed an executive order to ban the use of otherwise legal fireworks in most of Marion County. Metro Police were give the task of enforcing this seven-day ban.

Police told Eyewitness News that enforcement would be tricky because they have to witness a person violating the order before taking action. We were also told that the highest number of fireworks complaints were coming from the Fountain Square area.

Sure enough, on Sunday night we heard the unmistakable, celebratory sounds. And we also found that not everyone had heard fireworks were banned by Ballard until at least three days after the fourth of July.

For violating the order, police are instructed to issue verbal warning first. If the offender repeats, then fines may be levied up to $2,500. And if the offenses continue, more fines and possible jail time not to exceed 180 days is the next step.

The ban includes all fireworks, even those that were once considered safe.
