EUGENE, OREGON -
Kara Patterson, a 2009 Purdue graduate, finished second in the javelin at the U.S. Track and Field trials Sunday, and will make her second Olympics appearance after she qualified for the 2008 games in Beijing, China. There, Patterson finished 4141st overall.
Wallace Spearmon won the 200 meters at the U.S. track trials in 19.82 seconds on Sunday to earn a spot on the Olympic team. Maurice Mitchell was second in 20:14, and Isiah Young third in 20:16 to round out the U.S. team in the event for the London Games.
Sprinters Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay were missing from the field because they decided to pass on the 200 after securing spots on the Olympic team in the 100.
Reigning Olympic 200 bronze medalist Walter Dix didn't run because of a lingering hamstring injury that was apparent in the 100. Dix's only option for making it to London will be as a member of the 400 relay team.
Men's 1500
Leo Manzano won the men's 1,500 meters at the U.S. track trails in 3 minutes, 35.75 seconds for a place on the Olympic team. Former Oregon Duck Matthew Centrowitz was second in 3:24.84 on Sunday at Hayward Field. His fellow college teammate, Andrew Wheating, was third in 3:36.68 for the final spot on the U.S. team for the London Games.
Manzano was runner-up in the event at the trials in 2008.
IU's Andy Bayer just missed an Olympic berth with a fourth-place finish.
Women's Long Jump
Brittney Reese won her fifth straight U.S. title in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 5 1/2 inches at the track trials, earning her a place on the Olympic team.
Chelsea Hayes was second Sunday at Hayward Field in 23-3 1/2, and Janay DeLoach won the third spot on the U.S. team for the London Games with a jump of 23-2 3/4. Reese, the two-time world champion, finished fifth in the Beijing Olympics.
Women's 400 Hurdles
Defending outdoor champion Lashinda Demus won the women's 400-meter hurdles at the U.S. track trials in 53.98 seconds to earn a place on the Olympic team. Georganne Moline was second in 54.33, and T'Erea Brown was third in 54.81 at Hayward Field on Sunday for the other spots on the U.S. team in the London Games.
Brown was the 2010 U.S. champion in the event. She and Demus were the only American women to run under 55 seconds this season heading into the trials.
Women's Javelin
Brittany Borman won the javelin at the U.S. track trials with a throw of 201 feet, 9 inches, putting her on the Olympic team. Patterson was second at 196-2, and Kimberly Hamilton finished third with a throw of 190-5 at Hayward Field.
Because Hamilton does not have the Olympic "A'' standard of 200-1 this season to make the U.S. team for the London Games, the third spot on the team went to fourth-place finisher, Rachel Yurkovich.
Run-off Monday
The tie for third place in the women's 100 meters at the U.S. track trials will be decided by a runoff Monday.
Officials confirmed Sunday that Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh would race to determine the third member of the Olympic team for London.
Felix and Tarmoh finished in a dead heat for third place in the women's 100 more than a week ago. Track officials had no policy in place to decide things but devised a tiebreaker that included the options of a runoff or a coin flip.
The coach of both athletes said they wanted to wait to make a decision until after Saturday night's 200 meters so they could focus on that race.
