About 60 protest Daniels appointment to Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE -

Nearly 60 opponents of Gov. Mitch Daniels' appointment as the next president of Purdue University have demonstrated on the Memorial Mall of the West Lafayette campus.

Former Purdue education dean Marilyn Haring said at the protest Saturday that "it's a travesty for a nonacademic to head a great research university." Haring has withdrawn a $1 million gift to the school over the Daniels appointment.

WLFI-TV reports the protest was organized by a group calling itself the Society for an Open and Accountable Purdue. Members say appointing Daniels as president is wrong because of his cuts to education as governor and his relationship to the members of the Board of Trustees.

Purdue trustees chairman Keith Krach says they've received a 10-to-1 positive reaction to their vote last week to appoint Daniels.
