Lafayette Farmers Market to crack down on dogs

Posted: Updated:
LAFAYETTE -

Concerns over food safety could soon make the Lafayette Farmers Market a pet-free zone.

Market organizers say they may start having police officers who patrol the area to ask visitors who bring their canines with them to leave.

Manager Kim Murray tells the Journal & Courier that a city ordinance bars dogs from entering the market.

Farm or show animals are allowed so long as they are for demonstration purposes and kept in an enclosed area. Those who violate the ordinance can be ticketed.

Murray urges pet owners to visit a nearby dog park instead. But owners who want to visit a market with their canines still have options.

The Purdue and Sagamore West markets in West Lafayette both allow dogs.
