Drought prompts Fishers to ban professional fireworks displays

The Fishers Fire Department chief has announced a ban on professional fireworks displays.

The ban will affect fireworks scheduled for Symphony on the Prairie, which posted the following notice:

With the current burn ban in place for Hamilton County and working directly with the Fishers Fire Department, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has determined that the Star-Spangled Symphony concerts on July 2, 3 and 4 will not conclude with the 8-minute fireworks finale unless significant rainfall occurs between now and July 2.  The final decision will be made on Monday, July 2 at noon.

Fire Chief Steven Orusa says the dry conditions are posing a "significant fire hazard" and that extra vigilance is required to prevent fires.

The order, issued on Friday, June 29th, is in effect until the fire department determines that the threat is over. Anyone violating the order will be subject to fines.

The order does not affect any fireworks planned for Geist.

Brown County and Brownsburg have joined the list of communities to postpone their planned fireworks displays because of the dry weather.

Beech Grove, Lapel, Delphi, Auburn and Kokomo have also cancelled their fireworks.
