GREENWOOD -

Police in Greenwood have arrested a former police officer for the death of his estranged girlfriend.

Michael V. Richards, 44, was arrested Thursday on charges of aggravated battery and involuntary manslaughter in the death of 44-year-old Michelle Andrews. Andrews was found dead in her apartment on Stonehedge East Drive on June 2. An autopsy concluded she died of blunt force trauma.

Our newsgathering partners at the Indianapolis Star report Richards was a police officer in Southport for three months in 2009, when he was asked to resign because of "several violations of department policies." The Star says Richards had previously worked for the police departments in Homecroft, Westfield and at the University of Indianapolis.

He was taken into custody without incident at the Wheeler Mission in Indianapolis Thursday evening. Richards is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $28,000 bond.
