Two Indiana schools part of asthma education study

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana health officials say federal officials will assess asthma education and management programs at two schools to see if they can be replicated elsewhere around the county.

The Indiana State Department of Health says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will assess programs at Molly B. Hoover Elementary in Crawfordsville and Oaklandon Elementary in Indianapolis.

Both Hoover and Oaklandon participated in the state's Fly a Flag program that provides grade-specific curriculum about air quality and its impact on health. The program has students check the air quality index daily, and the schools raise a colored flag to indicate the air quality.

The state agency says asthma is one of the leading reasons for school absenteeism nationwide.
