Kokomo bans use of fireworks

KOKOMO -

Fire officials in Kokomo have banned the use of fireworks.

Kokomo Fire Chief Pat O'Neill announced the ban Tuesday night, due to the lack of rain and dry conditions in central Indiana.

"The fireworks ban begins at midnight tonight and runs indefinitely until weather conditions improve," said Kokomo Fire Chief Pat O'Neill. "Right now, we have an environment that is extremely conducive to producing a structure fire. In these dry conditions, all it would take to ignite a house is for a firework to land on someone's house, garage or in their gutters."

The ban prohibits the discharge of all fireworks, as well as public and private fireworks displays.

Howard County is one of 72 Indiana counties currently under a burn ban.
