107 attending Notre Dame camps become ill

SOUTH BEND -

Health officials are trying to determine what caused more than 100 youths taking part in sports camp at the University of Notre Dame to become ill.

Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown says all but two of the approximately 30 youths taken to hospitals were released after treatment Wednesday. He said those two were expected to be held overnight. He says the illnesses were gastrointestinal.

St. Joseph County Health Officer Dr. Thomas Felger says testing is under way to determine whether the illnesses were caused by a norovirus, which can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The participants were male and female middle and high school students attending camps for football, hockey, basketball, lacrosse and tennis.
