Federal court upholds EPA's global warming rules

WASHINGTON -

Environmentalists say a ruling from a federal appeals court Tuesday is a landmark decision for global warming policy.

A three-judge federal appeals panel ruled the EPA was "unambiguously correct" is using existing federal laws to try to reduce the gases blamed for global warming.

EPA administrator Lisa Jackson called the ruling a "strong validation" of the agency's approach to the issue.

The Obama administration's rules had been challenged by industry groups and several states. Mitt Romney had been critical of the EPA's regulations, saying they exceeded the intent of legislation.

Industry groups are vowing to keep fighting. The head of the National Association of Manufacturers, Jay Timmons, says the ruling is "a setback for businesses facing damaging regulations from the EPA." He says manufacturers will be considering their legal options.
