Indianapolis woman killed in Putnam Co. crash

PUTNAM COUNTY -

An Indianapolis woman was killed in a crash on Interstate 70 in Putnam County Tuesday afternoon.

State police say cement truck was attempting to maneuver around a section of freshly-poured concrete in a construction zone on the interstate at the 30 mile marker when the left side wheels fell into the wet concrete, causing the truck to lose control. It then veered left and tipped over, landing on an SUV driven by 70-year-old Georgia Mathews of Indianapolis, who was able to free herself from the vehicle and was not injured.

Mathews' husband Willis, 74, was trapped in the vehicle for nearly two hours before he was extricated by crews from the Washington Township and Cloverdale Township fire departments. Police say he was conscious during the entire ordeal and was taken to Methodist Hospital by helicopter for treatment of lower leg and internal injuries.

The couple's sister-in-law, Margaret Mathews, 73, of Indianapolis, a passenger in the back seat, was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma at the scene.

Police do not believe drugs and alcohol were a factor in the crash and no citations have been issued.

The interstate was closed for two hours while emergency crews worked at the scene.
