INDIANAPOLIS -
Another IMPD officer is off the job and under investigation for reportedly showing up for work intoxicated.
Eyewitness News uncovered the investigation last week, but is not naming the officer because he hasn't been charged with a crime.
The trouble started for the officer when a fellow officer reportedly noticed something wrong. Sources tell Eyewitness News the officer was intoxicated when he appeared for a police training class. IMPD has confirmed it is waiting for the internal investigation to run its course before disclosing details.
Acting IMPD Chief Rick Hite placed the officer on administrative leave for now.
The trouble comes after a string of law enforcement officers have ended up behind bars. Many are now defending themselves against criminal charges.
Hite says the officer in the recent investigation is getting help.
"The internal process is working. We are going to render some services to the individual. Once we have completed the investigation, we don't mind sharing what we can with the public, but right now we are still gathering information and part of that is making sure we know what it is and verifying facts as they were reported to us," the chief said.
Hite says right now, there is no timetable on how long the investigation will take, but it is protocol for officers under investigation to remain on administrative leave the entire time. He also says he wants officers to come to the rescue of other officers experiencing personal issues on the job.
