South Bend council OKs riverfront district

SOUTH BEND -

The South Bend City Council has approved a plan to offer liquor licenses at a discount to try to encourage more restaurants and cultural destinations to open downtown.

The council on Monday unanimously approved boundaries for the development district along the St. Joseph River that enables new establishments to obtain liquor licenses from the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission for $1,000. Those licenses can cost $30,000 or more on the open market.

Downtown South Bend Inc. executive director Aaron Perri tells the South Bend Tribune that the purpose of the riverfront district is to encourage development in an area that is underutilized.
