Local officials try to limit fireworks across Indiana

Some local officials around Indiana are trying to prohibit the shooting of fireworks because of the drought conditions despite a state law allowing residents to use fireworks around the Fourth of July.

The county commissioners in northern Indiana's Miami County have banned fireworks under a local disaster emergency order approved Monday. State law allows the use of fireworks from June 29 to July 9 even in areas under open burning bans but the Kokomo Tribune reports Peru Fire Chief Chris Betzner argues the county can take the step under the emergency declaration.

State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson tells The Associated Press that authority is uncertain and it hasn't been challenged in court.

About two-thirds of Indiana's 92 counties have issued open burning bans after weeks of little or no rainfall.
