State to publicize new fertilizer rules for farms

Posted: Updated:
WEST LAFAYETTE -

State officials will hold workshops around Indiana to inform farmers and others of new rules regulating the use of manure and other fertilizers.

The rules take effect next February. They specify how fertilizer can be safely stored on farms until use and how far from waterways and wells it can be applied and under what weather and other conditions.

The Office of Indiana State Chemist has posted the rules and related frequently asked questions on its website. The agency also will inform licensed fertilizer dealers and private and commercial applicators of the rules by mail.

In addition, the chemist's office intends to keep environmental groups informed of how the rules are implemented.
