INDIANAPOLIS -

Several residents were displaced by a fire at a southeast Indianapolis apartment complex Monday evening.

Firefighters were called to the Emerson Village Apartments around 6:30 p.m. and arrived to find heavy fire showing. A resident told firefighters he smelled smoke in his apartment, then looked onto his balcony and saw flames. He evacuated and alerted other residents in the building.

The man said he was unsure what may have started the fire, but said he had smoked on his balcony earlier in the day.

Ten residents were displaced by the fire, which gutted two units, with two more being affected by water damage and four damaged by smoke.

The fire remains under investigation.
