Garfield Park pool still closed following chemical spill

INDIANAPOLIS -

Garfield Park Pool will remain closed Tuesday as investigators continue to look for the cause of a chemical spill that sickened over 70 children last week.

The Health Department has cleared the pool to open, but the Parks Department is taking some extra steps as it waits for a final mechanical inspection report. Once they receive the final report, they will review it and determine if additional action is necessary before re-opening the pool.

More than 70 children and adults became sick Thursday dealing with irritated skin and trouble breathing while at the pool. Park officials are trying to figure out if a worker made a mistake in mixing pool chemicals or if the filtering system malfunctioned.

"We need a better understanding of what happened mechanically; if the mechanics of the pool are functioning properly in terms of pumps and valves," said Jennifer Pittman, Parks Dept.
