Backpack Attack to provide thousands of supplies to students

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

It's something many members in the Indiana community take for granted: school supplies for kids. 88-percent of Indiana Public School students can't afford the basic supplies they need to succeed in the classroom.

With many schools now on a balanced calendar, students will be back in the classroom as early as July 30th.

That's where the BackPack Attack Campaign comes in. It is an effort to help keep those students from falling behind.

First, businesses and organizations who have already signed up will drive through the Children's Museum parking lot Monday morning and pick up bins to collect supplies over the month of July. The participants will collect everything from erasers, pencils, and calculators to crayons, markers, and notebooks.

All of the supplies collected are sorted into backpacks and given out at the end of July.

Thirty-five thousand students received a bag thanks to Backpack Attack last year.

What are the different ways Eyewitness News viewers can make a difference? Call Indy Backpack Attack to have bins and posters delivered to you so you can serve as a collection site. You can also buy and donate supplies to Indy BackPack Attack or drop them off at one of the organizations listed on their website.

In addition, participants can bring supplies to the Indiana Fever game one July 7th. If you would prefer to serve as a volunteer, you can help to sort, count, and pack thousands of school supplies into backpacks.

Last but not least, anyone can make a tax deductible donation to Indy Backpack Attack online by clicking here.
