Democratic lawmaker Welch passes on Senate race

Posted: Updated:
BLOOMINGTON -

State Rep. Peggy Welch has taken herself out of the running for the state Senate ballot spot being vacated by Vi Simpson on the November ballot.

The Bloomington Democrat tells The Herald Times she'll seek re-election to her House seat. Simpson is giving up her Senate candidacy because she's running for lieutenant governor as running mate to Democratic gubernatorial nominee John Gregg.

Democratic precinct committee leaders in Senate District 40 will caucus Thursday to determine who to place on the Senate race ballot.

Three Monroe County officeholders - Commissioner Mark Stoops, Assessor Judy Sharp and Solid Waste Management District Executive Director Larry Barker - are seeking the ballot spot. Whoever's chosen will face Republican Reid Dallas in the general election.
