Firefighters keep close eye on fireworks display

FISHERS -

As the Fourth of July holiday nears, there are growing concerns that fireworks could spark grass fires. So far, 55 of Indiana's 92 counties have banned open burning due to the lack of rain, but that ban does not apply to fireworks.

Sunday afternoon, a few hours before the Fishers Freedom Festival fireworks display is set to begin, Phil Ramsey, owner of Ramsey PyroTechnics, needs to knows where his mortar shells will land.

Each one of the shells are wrapped in paper and some of that paper will reach the ground burning. The ground is so dry that the Fisher Fire Department had to soak the area with water around the fireworks before Ramsey could set off the fireworks.

"I've never had a show cancel in my whole career, we have had some droughts" Ramsey said.

After an afternoon of testing the wind and talking with the Fisher Fire Department, Ramsey and his crew set the mortar shells in a pattern. The pattern is dictated by 20 years of experience of keeping millions of burning piece of paper in one specific area.

The success of Sunday night's fireworks show has set a precedent for the many shows to come.
