Study: Drinking down, suicide up among Ind. teens

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A new study finds that Indiana teens are drinking less alcohol than in the past, but are more likely than their counterparts across the country to commit suicide.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its 2011 survey of teenage health risks Friday.

The survey found that Indiana high school students were less likely to binge drink or to drive while drunk.

But the study also shows they were more likely to attempt suicide, with that number rising from 7 percent in 2003 to 11 percent in 2011.

State Health Commissioner Gregory Larkin says childhood obesity also remains a serious health risk.
