Pieces of Evansville stadium to be salvaged

EVANSVILLE -

A downtown Evansville arena will be torn down, but officials in the Ohio River city plan to salvage some of its parts.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports seats from Roberts Stadium are to be moved to the Mesker Ampitheatre, and bricks from the arena will be auctioned off to raise funds for the University of Evansville. The stadium hosted the UE basketball from 1955 to 2011.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says officials are taking inventory of other items such as concession facilities and basketball goals. An auction may be held in late July or early August.

Winnecke says the stadium demolition likely will begin soon after the auction. The city's parks board this week approved plans to raze the stadium and convert the site to a park.
