Fort Wayne-area utility facing water troubles

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

Fort Wayne's city water system is providing water to a private suburban utility that's faced troubles meeting the demand of increased water use during recent drought conditions.

The utilities say about 10 percent of Aqua Indiana's 12,000 customers in the Fort Wayne area were being switched to city water. The Journal Gazette reports Aqua Indiana customers used more than 5.2 million gallons Tuesday - twice as much as last year.

Aqua Indiana president Tom Bruns says he hopes that a combination of conservation and the connection to the Fort Wayne water system will relieve recent water pressure problems.

Aqua Indiana says few customers have followed its request for reduced lawn sprinkling.

The city utility says it could provide more water to Aqua Indiana if necessary.
