NW Indiana high school coach faces misconduct charges

HAMMOND -

A northwestern Indiana high school's boys basketball coach faces felony charges that he engaged in sexual activities with a female student.

Lake County court documents say 26-year-old Benjamin Chinn and the 17-year-old girl kissed and engaged in sexual activities in his classroom and office at Hammond's Morton High School.

Defense attorney Scott King tells the Post-Tribune that Chinn denies the allegations and says he had only talked with the girl. King says he doesn't know of any physical evidence or any corroboration of the girl's account from other witnesses.

Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller tells The Times of Munster that the investigation began after the girl confided in her father and he called police.

Chinn is out of jail on bond after his arrest Tuesday on child seduction charges.
