Man missing after boat capsizes in Lake Michigan

BEVERLY SHORES -

Authorities say a New York City man disappeared off Lake Michigan's Indiana shore while out on the water in a small inflatable boat on a gusty day.

A state conservation officer says divers and crews using boats and a helicopter couldn't find 31-year-old Leonel Dominguez of the Bronx before nightfall Monday.

Officer Gene Davis says Dominguez and Evelyn Hernandez were rowing the boat off Beverly Shores when winds topping 30 mph and 3-foot waves prevented them from returning to shore. Dominguez tried to pull the boat in by swimming, but the boat capsized when he attempted to climb back in.

A man on the beach was able to help Hernandez to shore.

Davis tells the Post-Tribune that the pair was visiting Hernandez's sister in Beverly Shores.
