Lizton man shoots wife, then himself

LIZTON -

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday for a woman killed in Hendricks County. Police say it was a murder and attempted suicide.

The woman was shot by her husband who then turned the gun on himself. It happened at the couple's home near Lizton in the 8200 block of North Hendricks County Road 400 West late Monday night. The husband, who is 37, was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say the couple was having drinks with a friend renting a barn from them. The couple got into an argument at the barn, then went back into the home. Police say that's when the friend heard a gunshot.

The friend went to the house and found the woman dead on a sidewalk. He then heard two more shots.

"We don't have any history of any domestic violence here that we've responded to. We do know that there was a small child in the residence during the altercation. However, we don't believe the child witnessed the event or was ever in any harm's way," said Lt. Jim Yetter, Hendricks County Sheriff's Department.

Police believe the couple had been living in the home together for around seven years.

The toddler's grandmother took the child from the home.

Police say the husband was seriously injured by self-inflicted gunshots. Police don't plan to release the victims' names until later Tuesday or possibly Wednesday morning.
