List of Indiana counties with burn bans grows

Posted: Updated:

Dry conditions caused three counties in northern Indiana and one in the state's southwest corner to ban outdoor burning on Monday, extending the list of counties in the state under burn bans to 31.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security added DeKalb, Pulaski, Tippecanoe and Warrick counties to its list on Monday. Eighteen counties in northeast Indiana, four counties in the Lafayette area, three counties in western Indiana, and Warrick and Monroe counties have issued the bans. Other counties are considering similar bans.

In central Indiana, Johnson, Shelby and Monroe Counties are under burn bans.

The federal government's U.S. Drought Monitor map released last week showed nearly 90 percent of Indiana is abnormally dry and 40 percent of the state is in a moderate drought. An updated map comes out Thursday.
