Bobcat struck by vehicle, killed in Columbus

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - A state Department of Natural Resources biologist says a bobcat being struck and killed by a vehicle is another indication bobcats have become more common in southern Indiana.

The DNR's Scott Johnson tells The Republic that he has heard of a couple reports in recent years of bobcats being hit on Interstate 65 and one on Indiana 46 in Bartholomew County. He says he doesn't know how many bobcats Indiana has.

The latest victim was a bobcat struck by a vehicle in Columbus, about 45 miles south of Indianapolis.

Columbus police Sgt. Matt Harris says the bobcat weighed nearly 20 pounds and was about 2 years old.

Bobcats are a protected species, meaning it is illegal to hunt them.
