Push under way to revise Indiana's road funding

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A drop in revenue from Indiana's gasoline tax is fueling a push for state lawmakers to revise how the state funds the maintenance of local roads and bridges.

Local officials around the state are struggling with receipts from the state gas tax that are less than what they got in 2000.

As that revenue has fallen, the cost of maintaining roads and bridges has only gone up.

Lawmakers shied away from discussing the problem in recent years due to tight state budgets, but now that Indiana has a budget surplus that discussion is likely to change.

Matt Greller of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns tells The Journal Gazette that studies show that Indiana's infrastructure, particularly local roads and streets, "are woefully underfunded."
