Indiana manufacturing jobs rebound, but wages lower

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana's manufacturing industry is seeing a slow recovery as factories add back some of the 100,000 jobs lost during the recession, but wages are often less than they were before the economic collapse.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports wages haven't kept pace with inflation in part because of a weak job market and companies' need to compete with lower-cost foreign manufacturers. That means the average factory worker is earning $1.07 less than he was three years ago once wages are adjusted for inflation.

Even places that have maintained hefty wages have seen changes, including protecting older workers at the expense of younger new hires.

Purdue University economics professor Jerry Lynch says globalization has forced employers and workers to consider how production costs here compare with those overseas.
